Dental Floss
The mouth, constantly in contact with the external environment and due to foods consumed throughout the day, is an environment where bacteria and microorganisms can easily multiply. Therefore, maintaining oral and dental health is not only aesthetically important but also crucial for general health. At this point, one of the indispensable tools for dental care is dental floss. Dental floss cleans the spaces between teeth that a toothbrush struggles to reach, removing accumulated food debris and plaque.
When used with the correct technique and regularly, it contributes to the prevention of gum diseases and significantly improves oral hygiene. Regular dental floss use helps reduce bad breath while also lowering the risk of tooth decay. Dentist Emin Serhat Arıkan emphasized the importance of using dental floss with the correct methods for an effective oral care routine and provided information on proper flossing techniques.
What is Dental Floss?
Dental floss is a thin and flexible cleaning tool used in oral and dental care. It is preferred for cleaning food debris, bacterial plaque, and microorganisms accumulated in areas between teeth that a toothbrush cannot reach. Generally made from special fibers like nylon or Teflon, dental floss does not replace brushing. When used in conjunction with brushing, it provides effective results in maintaining oral and dental health. When dental floss is used regularly and correctly;
- Helps prevent tooth decay,
- Reduces the risk of gum inflammation and bleeding,
- Contributes to the elimination of bad breath,
- Plays a complementary role in oral hygiene.
How to Use Dental Floss Correctly?
Regular and correct use of dental floss is an important part of daily oral care. When applied along with brushing, it significantly benefits the maintenance of oral hygiene. However, for effective cleaning, dental floss must be used with the correct methods. The method of using dental floss may vary depending on an individual's tooth alignment and mouth structure. When applied correctly, it cleans food debris and plaque accumulation between teeth that a toothbrush cannot reach. This helps reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum diseases. The following basic steps should be observed when using dental floss:
- Tear off about 35–40 cm of dental floss, wrap most of the floss around the middle fingers of both hands, leaving a 4–5 cm section in the middle for use.
- Control the floss with your thumbs and index fingers, and gently insert it between your teeth.
- Wrap the dental floss around the side surface of the tooth in a C-shape and apply with up-and-down motions; during this, it should go slightly below the gum line.
- Do not press the floss with sudden and harsh movements to avoid damaging the gums.
- After cleaning each tooth gap, a clean section of the floss should be used to maintain hygiene.
- When removing the dental floss from between the teeth, move slowly and controllably.
What are the Types of Dental Floss?
Dental flosses are divided into different types according to the material they are made from and their design for use. Choosing a dental floss suitable for one's oral and dental structure increases cleaning effectiveness while also contributing to the protection of the gums. Here are the types of dental floss according to their production material:
- Monofilament (PTFE): These are dental flosses that consist of a single strand, pass easily between teeth due to their smooth structure, and are resistant to shredding.
- Multifilament (Nylon): Produced by combining multiple fibers. They come in waxed or unwaxed options and are generally offered with different flavors.
According to their design, dental flosses are examined in two groups:
- Floss Picks: These have a single-use structure and are especially suitable for those who prefer practical use.
- Spool Floss: This is the classic form, providing the user with advantages in length and control.
What are the Benefits of Using Dental Floss?
Starting dental floss use at an early age provides significant advantages for oral and dental health. Regular use helps maintain oral hygiene by removing plaque and food debris accumulated between teeth. Using dental floss enhances the feeling of cleanliness in the teeth, helps keep breath fresher, and protects gum health. Especially when applied before bed at night, it ensures the removal of bacteria and plaque accumulated throughout the day. With regular use, the effects become clearer over time. The feeling of cleanliness in the mouth increases, and tooth surfaces gain a smoother structure.
When Should Dental Floss Be Used?
Permanent teeth typically begin to erupt in the mouth around age 6. During this period, when teeth start to touch, it is recommended to begin using dental floss. For individuals who maintain regular oral hygiene, using dental floss once a day is generally sufficient. While there is no strict rule regarding the specific time of day to use dental floss, it is considered more effective when applied before bedtime. This helps clean plaque and bacterial residue accumulated between teeth throughout the day and helps prevent bad breath that can occur in the mornings.
