Combined Teeth Whitening
Today, teeth whitening has become an important practice that goes beyond aesthetic concerns for both women and men, increasing an individual's self-confidence. Intensive tea, coffee, and cigarette consumption, as well as natural color changes over time, can lead to a duller and yellower appearance of teeth. This situation can negatively affect a person's smile aesthetics and self-confidence in social life. Teeth whitening procedures aim to eliminate these discolorations to achieve a healthier, well-groomed, and younger appearance. Combined (in-office + at-home) teeth whitening is one of the commonly applied teeth whitening methods. Dentist Emin Serhat Arıkan, who serves patients in his clinic in Adana, explained the definition, application process, advantages, and points to consider after combined teeth whitening treatment.
What is Combined Whitening (At-Home + In-Office Together)?
Combined teeth whitening is an effective whitening technique that uses both in-office (applied in the clinic) and at-home teeth whitening methods together. The treatment begins with a professional whitening procedure performed by the dentist in a clinical setting; it then continues with an at-home whitening application lasting several days to reinforce the achieved whiteness and increase its permanence. Thanks to this method, planned under the supervision of a dentist, a more homogeneous, natural, and long-lasting whiteness is achieved.
How is Combined Teeth Whitening Applied?
First Step Begins in the Clinical Environment: Combined teeth whitening treatment begins with a professional whitening procedure applied in a clinical setting. At this stage, the dentist uses an appropriate whitening agent according to the current color and staining level of the teeth, providing a visible whiteness in a short time. Clinical application constitutes an effective first step, especially in eliminating deep and stubborn stains.
Then the At-Home Whitening Process Begins: After in-office whitening, the at-home whitening process begins to increase the permanence of the achieved whiteness and balance the color tone. Application is done at home with custom-made trays prepared by the dentist and a controlled dose of whitening gel. This process is usually planned for 7 to 14 days and is regulated according to the dentist's recommendations.
Long-Lasting Whiteness: Thanks to the combined whitening method, a more homogeneous, natural, and long-lasting whiteness is achieved compared to at-home or in-office whitening applied alone. When designed under the supervision of a dentist, the treatment is safely administered and offers aesthetically satisfying results.
In Which Situations is Combined Teeth Whitening (Bleaching) Not Performed?
Combined teeth whitening treatment may not be suitable for every patient. Application is not recommended without evaluating the structural condition of the teeth, oral health, and general health conditions. Combined teeth whitening treatment is not applied or is postponed in the following situations:
- In teeth with advanced enamel erosion and excessively worn teeth,
- In teeth with large pulp chambers, due to the risk of pulp damage,
- In the presence of porcelain crowns, laminate veneers, or similar fixed restorations in the mouth (these restorations are not affected by the whitening process),
- In the presence of active decay, infection, abscess, or untreated periodontal disease,
- During pregnancy and breastfeeding,
- In individuals allergic to hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide found in whitening gels,
- In individuals with poor oral hygiene, heavy plaque and calculus accumulation,
- In teeth with advanced tetracycline-induced stains (a substance that can cause permanent gray-brown discoloration by binding to tooth enamel during tooth development from certain antibiotics),
- If there are trauma-related fractures, cracks, or active decays in the teeth,
- In patients with advanced gum recession where tooth roots are largely exposed,
- In individuals with excessive tooth sensitivity, combined whitening can be planned after sensitivity-reducing treatments are applied and suitability is evaluated by the dentist.
What are the Advantages of the Combined Teeth Whitening Method?
Combined teeth whitening, thanks to the combined use of in-office and at-home applications, provides visible whiteness in a short time and helps maintain the achieved result for a long period. While rapid effects are obtained with professional application in a clinical setting, the supportive process done at home with custom trays and controlled whitening gels ensures homogeneous and lasting whiteness. When applied with correct patient selection and under the supervision of a dentist, it gives an aesthetic appearance without causing permanent damage to the teeth. It improves smile aesthetics, positively supporting the individual's self-confidence and quality of social life.
What are the Disadvantages of Combined Teeth Whitening?
In combined teeth whitening treatment, some patients may experience tooth and gum sensitivity depending on the whitening ingredients used. This sensitivity is usually temporary and subsides on its own within a short time. However, teeth whitening is not a permanent method. The duration of the achieved whiteness can vary depending on the patient's oral hygiene, smoking habits, and the frequency of consuming coloring foods such as tea and coffee. Generally, the whitening effect lasts between 6 months and 1 year. If the effect diminishes, the treatment can be safely repeated under the supervision of a dentist.
What Should Be Considered After Combined Teeth Whitening Treatment?
After combined teeth whitening treatment, it is necessary to carefully follow the dentist's recommendations to maintain the achieved whiteness. In this context, regular oral and dental care should not be neglected after the treatment. Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day with an appropriate toothpaste, and oral hygiene should be supported by using dental floss and oral care products. Additionally, limiting the consumption of tea, coffee, cigarettes, and foods that can cause staining in the first few days increases the permanence of the whitening results. With proper care habits, the aesthetic appearance obtained from the treatment can be maintained healthily for a long time.
