What Problems Do Wisdom Teeth Cause?
One of the most common problems in oral and dental health is wisdom teeth. These teeth, which usually start to erupt between the ages of 18–25, often cause various issues because there is not enough space in the jaw structure. While wisdom teeth may erupt without any symptoms in some people, they can cause serious complications in many others.
What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the third molars located at the very back of the mouth. They usually begin to erupt after adolescence. In many people, the jaw structure does not provide enough space for these teeth. This can cause the teeth to remain impacted, erupt at an incorrect angle, or put pressure on surrounding tissues.
What Are the Symptoms of Wisdom Teeth Eruption?
- Pain and pressure sensation in the back of the jaw
- Swelling in the gums
- Discomfort when swallowing
- Difficulty opening the mouth
- Ear and headache pain
- Bad breath
- Sensitivity and redness
What Are the Common Complications Caused by Wisdom Teeth?
- Impacted Tooth: One of the most common complications is an impacted wisdom tooth. The tooth may remain fully or partially trapped within the jawbone. Impacted teeth can cause severe pain, pressure on adjacent teeth, tooth shifting, and damage to the jawbone.
- Gum Infection: When a wisdom tooth cannot fully erupt, bacteria may accumulate under the gum. This leads to an infection called “pericoronitis.” It presents with severe pain, swelling, pus formation, bad breath, and fever.
- Decay in Adjacent Teeth: Because wisdom teeth are located in hard-to-reach areas, they cannot be cleaned effectively, leading to bacterial buildup. This can cause decay in both the wisdom tooth and adjacent teeth.
- Jaw Pain: Wisdom teeth that erupt in the wrong position can put pressure on the jawbone. This may lead to jaw pain, difficulty chewing, and headaches.
When Is Wisdom Tooth Extraction Necessary?
- If there is persistent pain
- If there are recurring infections
- If the impacted tooth is damaging surrounding teeth
- If decay or cysts develop
- If it affects orthodontic treatment
What Should Be Considered After Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Hot foods should be avoided for the first 24 hours.
Smoking and alcohol should be avoided.
Hard foods should not be consumed.
Oral hygiene should be maintained.
Medications prescribed by the dentist should be used regularly.
